Color grade is not the color of the finished product
A bale's natural color and the final shade of a shirt, towel or sheet are different subjects. Textile preparation can include cleaning, scouring, bleaching, dyeing and finishing. Yarn structure, fabric construction, dye selection and process control also influence final appearance.
This means a bright white finished fabric does not prove that it was made from a particular raw cotton color grade. Conversely, naturally cream or unbleached fabric is not necessarily made from inferior fiber. Its appearance may reflect a deliberate finishing decision rather than a measurable difference in overall quality.
How reflectance and yellowness work
Reflectance: the Rd value
Rd expresses the amount of light reflected by the prepared cotton sample under controlled measurement conditions. A higher Rd generally indicates lighter, brighter-looking cotton; a lower result indicates a grayer or duller appearance. Why both readings are necessary
Reflectance and yellowness describe different dimensions. Two samples can have similar brightness but different yellowness, or similar yellowness but different brightness. Plotting both values on the applicable color diagram provides more information than calling cotton simply “white” or “yellow.”
The resulting grade categories are not equal steps on a simple numerical scale. The relationship between Rd, +b and color grade is defined by regions on a diagram. For precise comparisons, buyers should examine the measured Rd and +b values and their distribution, not perform arithmetic on grade codes as if they were continuous test results. How USDA cotton classing assigns the grade

Manufacturing implications
Raw-fiber color can matter when a manufacturer needs consistent preparation, bleaching or dyeing across a production lot. Variation among bales may complicate efforts to achieve a uniform visual result. However, color grade does not directly predict spinning efficiency or yarn strength. Those outcomes also depend on properties such as fiber length, length uniformity, strength, micronaire, short-fiber content, cleanliness and processing controls.
Once cotton has become yarn or fabric, buyers should use tests appropriate to that production stage. Yarn evenness and strength data say more about yarn performance than a raw lint color grade. What consumers can and cannot learn from color grade
Consumers rarely see raw cotton classing data on a garment or home-textile label. Even when a brand discusses fiber quality, color grade by itself does not prove that the finished item will be softer, stronger, longer-lasting or easier to care for. Construction, yarn quality, fabric weight, finishing, sewing and use conditions can all be more immediately relevant.
Terms such as “natural white,” “unbleached” and “premium cotton” should not be treated as laboratory results unless the seller identifies a defined measurement, method and result. An unbleached cream shade may communicate a processing choice, but it is not an official cotton color grade. Likewise, an official grade is not an organic certification, origin guarantee or environmental assessment.
When choosing a finished product, check fiber-content information, fabric construction, care instructions and claims supported by clear evidence. Follow the product's care guidance to manage later discoloration, because washing, drying, storage and exposure during use can change a textile long after its raw fiber was classed.
